How I found out who Cadel was.
Well back in 1998, I knew nothing about mountain biking but was keen to pick up a sport after having an arthroscopy on my right knee and the surgeon said I could now do two types of sports from now on, (Sport I thought with a confused look on my face!?!) “Cycling & Swimming”. As I can’t stand swimming I decided a Mountain Bike was for me.
Off to the local bike shop at the time to pickup a bike. I walked away with an Apollo worth a grand total of AUS$300. I soon learned that this bike… with it’s sad cheap components was not built to be ridden up the road let alone in the Australian bushland. I turned to the only real source of MTB information… so I picked up a copy of a mountain bike magazine which had the newly crowned UCI Mountain Bike World Cup champion. A Mr Cadel Evans was on the cover riding none other than a Cannondale.
Well after about my 3rd Apollo mission in the bush I decided to scrap the Apollo and get myself a Cannondale, If it was good enough for Cadel to win the “UCI Mountain Bike World Cup” It was good enough for me to launch my Mountain Bike career. I’ve followed Cadel ever since, I eventually took up road bike riding and now only get out on the mountain biking once in a while, when I;m fleeling young at heart.
I have since then educated many a man woman ans or child, basically anyone that’ll listen about Cadel, now that he’s made it to be a front runner on the world stage… I stand back like a proud parent although I’m only a few years older than this awesome cyclist.
